THE state government is looking at the rearing of swiftlets for bird's nest production as a new source of income. The 1,036 breeders in the state, who own 1,484 swiflet houses, generate RM36 million a year, said state agriculture committee chairman Datuk Tan Aminuddin Ishak. He said Kuantan had the most breeders (500) followed by Rompin (218); Temerloh (200); Pekan (60); Bera (29); Jerantut (14); Raub (8) and Bentong (7). "We want to develop the industry further, but we will ensure the breeders adhere to the guidelines issued by the Veterinary Services Department," he said when winding up the debate on the 2009 Budget. Tan Aminuddin said licences would only be given to breeders who have the endorsement from the Veterinary Services and Wildlife and National Parks Department. Earlier, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said Felcra Bhd would develop 2,919 hectares of ladang rakyat in Maran, Jerantut, Lipis, Bera, Rompin and Kuantan. In his reply to Capt (Rtd) Mohd Johari Hussain (BN-Tioman), he said the state government had appointed Risda to develop the agropolitan project.

Singer Seha dies
KUALA LUMPUR: Popular 80s band Freedom lead singer Norsehah Abu Bakar, better known as Seha, died of lung cancer yesterday. The 44-year-old singer, who had her biggest hit number Mulanya Di Sini in the 1980s, was said to have been making plans to spend Hari Raya at a hotel in her hometown, Kuantan, despite her illness. Seha: Was making plans to spend Hari Raya at a hotel in her hometown, Kuantan, despite her illness. Her husband Azmi Thambi Chik, 41, said Seha was admitted to Kuala Lumpur Hospital 10 days ago and he last spoke to her at about 5pm on Tuesday. “She underwent three chemotherapy sessions on Monday and was very tired and sleeping a lot. I had to wake her up for her meals and medication,” said Azmi, who married Seha three years ago. Azmi, who is Malaysian Industrial Estate Bhd chief executive officer, said his wife’s condition deteriorated at about 8am yesterday. Seha was first married to foreigner Chris Lund Abdullah and divorced in 1998. She had two children – Karissa Iris Lund, 10, and Misha Kyrie Lund, 15 – from that marriage. At her uncle’s house in Taman Kesuma, Ampang, where her mother’s body was brought from hospital, Karissa expressed disappointment for not being at Seha’s bedside when she breathed her last. “I wish I was there. I was at school when she passed away. I’ll definitely miss her kisses and hugs, and the way she tucked me to sleep,” said Karissa, who appeared composed. Seha’s ex-band colleague Shuaib Shaari, 48, described her as a great entertainer. Fashion designer Bill Keith, singers Nurul (Nurul Huda Abdul Wahab) and Deja Moss, and former Miss Malaysia and actress Samantha Schubert were among those who paid their last respects to Seha, who was buried at the Taman Kosas Muslim Cemetery after zohor prayers. Swollen rivers take four lives
12 Nov 2006 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JERANTUT: Four 18-year-old students drowned in two incidents in Pahang and Terengganu. In Taman Negara here on Friday, two female students drowned in Sungai Tahan. Nurul Aina Aqilah and Nur Amalina Mohd Daud, students of Kolej Matrikulasi Pahang, were swimming with a group of students when they were swept away by strong currents. Several students managed to pull Nurul Aina onto the riverbank but they could not revive her. Her body was taken to the Jerantut Hospital before family members claimed it for burial at her hometown in Temerloh. Nur Amalina’s body was found at 9am yesterday. Her body was taken to the same hospital before it was claimed by her family for burial at her hometown in Seremban. State police chief Datuk Abdul Razak Bokhari said rivers tended to swell unexpectedly during the monsoon season. In Hulu Terengganu, Mohd Hafiz Shafie and Mohd Shamil Rusli, of Universiti Teknologi Mara, Dungun, died when they slipped into the deep end of a river at the Belukar Bukit rapids about 2.15pm yesterday during an outing with 10 friends. One of their friends, Ahmad Shamil Zaki, 18, who was also in the water at the time, said he tried to save them but could not because he was not a good swimmer. The friends went to seek help from the villagers in nearby Kampung Betung. Villager Abdul Aziz Ahmad, 39, said he and four others found the two bodies after searching for an hour. The bodies were taken to the Hulu Terengganu Hospital. |

Future festive road safety campaigns to focus on motorcyclists
29 Oct 2006 Shahrum Sayuthi KUANTAN, PAHANG, SUN: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ROAD safety campaigns during festivals will in future focus on motorcyclists who make up 70 per cent of fatalities during such periods. Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said this was an important lesson learnt during the Deepa-Raya season. “Motorcyclists and their pillion riders made up most of the recorded fatalities. We will definitely make them our primary target group in future," he said. He said Ops Sikap XI had been a success as the average daily death rate was 16.2 which was lower than the 17 recorded on normal days. This was despite traffic increasing three-fold over the non-festive period. He was speaking to reporters today after opening the Kuantan Hin Ann Association building. |

'Killer' Kuala Lipis road lives up to its name, claims another life
26 Oct 2006 M. Hamzah Jamaludin KUALA LIPIS, THURS: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- KNOWN as a killer stretch, the Kuala Lipis road has once again claimed another life when a Proton Wira collided with an express bus at KM66 today. The incident happened at 1.10am, about eight hours before Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang and his entourage were expected to visit dangerous spots along the main trunk road that link Kuala Lumpur to Gua Musang. The victims were identified as Mohd Farid Abdullah, a 27-year-old corporal of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) base in Labuan. His two younger brothers - Mohd Fazrul, 25 and Mohd Faizal, 20, - and their 25-year-old cousin, Mohd Rahim Mat Rabin, were also injured. However, drivers of the bus and their 36 passengers were unhurt. The Kuala Lipis-Merapoh road was known for fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles, especially buses. In November 2003, 14 people were killed when two buses collided. Six people were killed in two accidents involving buses in 2005. |

Land Code To Be Amended For Development Of Small Land Plots PENANG, Oct 12 (Bernama) -- The National Land Code will be amended to facilitate the development of land plots smaller than an acre. Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid said the ministry was working with the Attorney-General's Chambers to complete the amendment for tabling in Parliament this year. The amendment will enable pockets of land especially in Malay reserves to be developed and commercialised for the benefit of their owners instead of letting them remain idle, he said. At present, land titles cannot be given to land smaller than an acre, he told reporters after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the installation of the first e-Tanah project between the ministry and Penang government Thursday. On e-Tanah, he said it would enable the development of small plots of land to be better organised. He said the programme was part of the government's drive to computerise the management and administration of land. E-Tanah will enhance the effectiveness, transparency and integrity of the delivery system through reducing red tape, he said. Penang is the pioneer of the project which would come onstream early next year. -- BERNAMA |

'Mega Leap Programme' To Stamp Out Hardcore Poverty PUTRAJAYA, Oct 9 (Bernama) -- Some 10,000 hardcore poor families are expected to be lifted above the poverty line through the proposed "Mega Leap Programme" for rural areas. Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Aziz Shamsuddin said the programme would involve establishing growth centres based on agricultural development and small and medium industries (SMIs). Four areas selected as pioneer projects are Pulau Banggi (Sabah), Kesedar (Kelantan), Wilayah Ganda, Grik (Perak) and Gahai, Lipis (Pahang). "The new growth areas will become the catalyst for the development of surrounding areas including traditional villages and Orang Asli villages that are backward, isolated and neglected," Aziz said in a statement Monday. The programme was given the nod by the National Implementation Task Force chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi at its meeting, Monday. Under the programme, the ministry would develop 33,200 hectares at a cost of RM1 bilion. Aziz said the areas would be developed using an integrated approach involving building homes for the target groups and providing economic activities including commercial plantations, planting of cash crops, livestock breeding and fish rearing. Human capital development would receive priority with children being enrolled in kindergartens and youths in vocational courses. "The participants will reap the rewards 30 months after the start of the programme," he added. -- BERNAMA |
