Establish Close Rapport With The People, Marine Police Told E-mail this news to a friend Printable version of this news

KUANTAN, Oct 19 (Bernama) -- Intrusion and smuggling cases in the country's territorial waters can be significantly reduced, especially along the Pahang coastline, if the marine police expand their contact with people from all walks of life to get tip-offs, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said.

Through this approach, he said, preventive operations and intelligence gathering would be effective on local fishermen or foreign boats suspected of encroaching into the country's waters or involved in smuggling.

All parties, be they ordinary employees or higher-ups must cooperate in supporting and extending the assistance needed in executing enforcement raids, he said when speaking at a get-together and breaking of fast with marine policemen here Wednesday night.

Adnan also urged the marine police to step up night patrols to protect national security.

"If in the day we can rely and expect help from other enforcement agencies but at night we must work extra a bit," he said.

He also advised wives of marine policemen to assume the role of their husbands who are on duty at sea to monitor movements of their children to ensure they did not get involved in social ills, particularly drug addiction.
