Singaporeans taste village life

Story and photos by NIK NAIZI HUSIN

A GROUP of Singaporeans got to experience what real kampung life is like when they visited Kampong Leban Chondong in Rompin during a weekend.

The group of 24 people comprising mostly couples from tourism agencies in Singapore even had the chance to break fast “kampung-style” with the villagers on their arrival.

The visitors then joined their hosts for evening prayers at the mosque and later had moreh (supper) after terawih prayers at the mosque's verandah.

Shortly before midnight, they returned to the homes of their respective foster families in the village. At about 4am the village came to life again and the visitors had their sahur (early breakfast), before starting their fast for the day.

The group then congregated at the mosque for morning prayers.

Despite having only several hours of sleep, they managed to partake in all the activities arranged for them for the day.

They were taken to see villagers weaving mats with mengkuang leaves, weaving fishing nets, and preparing laksa and lemang.

The visitors then toured several resorts and chalets available in Rompin district including the Sommerset Colonial Hotel and Villa and Lanjut Golden Beach and Resort.

Group leader Jasni Jamil, who is also the Singapore National Co-operative Foundation director, said he saw much tourism values in the village despite his short stay.
