Tengku Abdullah: Hold courses on parenting
By SIMON KHOO
KUANTAN: The authorities have been urged to expedite the implementation of parental courses in the country. Tengku Mahkota of Pahang Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah said such courses would help address the increasing incidence of child abuse and neglect. “These courses need urgent implementation as many couples are facing socio-economic pressure in their daily lives. “Relevant authorities such as the Welfare Department should carry out a study on the pattern of divorce cases.

“How many cases are happening and why? How it will affect the children, especially their education?” he said during a visit to the Tengku Ampuan Fatimah Children Welfare Home here on Wednesday. The visit was held in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations with the aim of bringing some cheer to the children. Tengku Abdullah said, previously, the National Population and Family Development Board had proposed a parental course to guide newly-married couples to be responsible parents. He said the proposal should be given priority as it would ensure parents conducted proper planning and raise their children well. “These courses are useful and beneficial not just to newly-married couples but also to those who already have several children. “Parents can adopt the right principles and give counsel to build strong family bonds,” he said. On a separate matter, he urged the management of welfare homes to give more emphasis to the education aspect. “It is no longer enough just to provide food, clothing and a roof over the head. “They must ensure that residents are brought up properly and be responsible in society at large,” he said. Tengku Abdullah said, through proper education, the residents would be able to live independently in facing stiff challenges and be successful in their lives.
